5 Tips To Conceal Pesky Greys Between Hair Colour Applications
Take notes on these five ways to conceal regrowth and pesky greys in between your hair colour applications. From our go-to Light Set to exclusive colourist tips, we’ve curated the best products and advice that are perfect for dealing with greys in a pinch.
1. Power Powder: Go from Grey to Yay
Another fast and low commitment way to cover greys in between colour applications is our new Conceal & Cover Root Touch Up Powder. It is super silky, mess-free, hides away your greys, and makes hair appear thicker with a flick of the wrist. This pigmented power powder comes in a wide range of shades to seamlessly match your hair colour. Plus, it conveniently fits in your purse and is the best companion for a girl’s night out.
The double-ended precision brush is easy to use on stubborn greys and regrowth in a snap. When you’re in a pinch, this versatile pigment fills in hairlines and brows too. Its lush conditioning formula keeps your roots hydrated and never feels waxy.
Colourist tip:
To lock in the powder until your next shampoo, spritz with a little hairspray to finish. Also, if you are in-between shades and not quite sure which shade is best for you, we recommend going with the darker of the two. A slightly darker root will look more natural and you don't want to risk the look of a “hot root.”
2. Brush on root coverage.
Not into powders? We’ve got a Temporary Root Touch-Up that’s as compact as your mascara with a magical wand that conceals your greying roots in a swipe. The consistency is nice-n-thick, targeting stubborn greys and regrowth in-between touch-ups with precision. And it’s great for your baby hairs and any stubborn strands around your hairline. Take it anywhere, in your smallest makeup bag, and don’t worry about your roots with ten shades to choose from.
Colourist tip: Swipe the wand beginning at the root or at your baby hairs, working the product away from your hairline until you’ve covered your regrowth completely. This technique helps to smooth the product down, so it looks as natural as possible. Once the Temporary Root Touch-Up is dry, take a paddle brush and softly brush your hair; brushing creates a diffused line that blends the product into the hair without a trace.
3. Change up your hairstyle.
For a quick save, try a new hairstyle or flip your part to another side that contains less grey to cover your roots completely without any product. Hairstyles like funky top knots or braids reminiscent of Daphne Bridgerton will do the trick by shielding your most noticeable regrowth. Many times, moving around how you normally wear your hair can camouflage your roots since grey hair doesn’t grow on the full head equally. As a chic last resort, throw on a statement headband to effectively cover hairline greys.
Colourist tip: As a wonderful perk, flipping your part can also increase volume and give your look an instant pick me up. Plus, you’ll have found a new way you might like to wear your hair. Don’t forget to tag @eSalon in your hair selfie when you do!
4. Add balayage highlights to mask regrowth.
Balayage, or painting in freehand, is another technique used to minimize obvious roots when highlighting. Using balayage on selected strands of hair with a darker shade makes hair look more natural like you were born with it. This painting technique makes hair appear lighter which minimizes the contrast to greys, requiring a lot less maintenance than traditional highlights.
Colourist tip: For a pretty pop of colour, concentrate the lightness by framing your face and applying balayage to the very ends of the hair; this adds a subtle lifting look to your colour. People will think you simply got a haircut, not highlights. Want balayage? Try our Light Set.
5. Don’t pluck it up.
Plucking grey hairs doesn’t solve anything. While it may seem like the perfect fix, it actually won’t stop grey hair from growing back, whatsoever. The hair actually grows back shorter and more wiry in texture, making your grey strands pop out straight up amongst the rest of your hair. Yikes!
Colourist tip: Avoid plucking at all costs. While it’s been proven that plucking grey hairs won’t cause more grey hairs to grow in, it doesn’t abolish them from your locks for good. Instead, cover up your greys with one of our products above until your next hair colour application. We promise these temporary techniques will make your pesky greys far less obvious and easier to manage.
